BARREL BOOM! 1862 Production Civil War Colt Army Model Revolver
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a nice .44 caliber Civil War Colt "Army" model revolver. These Colt army revolvers were a favorite of any Civil War soldier that was lucky enough to be able to get one. The early versions of the 1860 Army model were designed with the three screws in the frame. This has a dark gray all over with a well worn tone. Across the top of the barrel it has the Colt maker's mark and the New York City office location. These guns were actually manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut but New York City was the sales office location. What makes this gun so interesting is that just in front of the marking you can see the bulge where the barrel blew out. The can see the split in the metal and there is another split down by the loading lever. It has serial numbers of 62,715 except for the replacement barrel wedge which is an original with a different number, 7,446. Thanks to Mr. Colt's bookwork we know that these serial numbers would have been made in the middle part of 1862. On the sides of the cylinder you can still see traces of the roll engraved naval engagement scene. This scene depicts the naval battle between the Texas and and the Mexican navy. The side of the frame still has the "COLTS PATENT" stamping. The action is in functioning as it should. The handle of the gun has the original 1-piece walnut grips intact with a nice "used but not abused" look to the wood. On the sides of the grip you can see the side of the rectangular inspector cartouche. This stamping plus the small initials on the other parts of the gun are the markings where the gun was approved by the U.S. Government inspector. It lets us know that this is a military gun rather than a civilian produced gun. The brass of the triggerguard has a very pleasing golden tone to the brass. This is a nice honest well worn model 1860 Colt patent army revolver that displays well.
