This is a fine piece of history from a Civil War veteran. It is an original reunion badge that was worn by a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. This was the veteran's organization of the Union veterans of the Civil War. In order to become a member of the organization you had to prove that you served honorably for the United States during the war. This is the medal that the veteran would have worn for reunions on one side and then when you reverse the top bar it could be used for funerals of the members. The one side has the red-white and blue ribbon with gold fringe with the wording "G.A.R. Dexter, N.Y.". The back side is another story, the black ribbon reading "G.A.R. Dexter, N.Y." but with silver lettering on the black mourning ribbon. The original attachment pin is present on the reverse. The top bar is made of celluloid reading "J. Broadbent Post No. 188" another celluloid below reading "Member" with the lower hanging celluloid of the GAR Medal. This one is very nice and will enhance any collection. This piece came from the collection of noted collector Don Limpert (1927-2022). Don Limpert was a long-time collector of memorabilia from the veterans of the Civil War with an emphasis on the Grand Army of the Republic, the Union veterans of the Civil War organization. He saw the possibilities of combining his vast collection of GAR memorabilia with an original Grand Army of the Republic post building that was available to purchase in downtown Eaton Rapids, Michigan. He purchased the building in 2012, and the building became the Michigan Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall and Museum. After his passing in 2022, his collection was sold and now is your chance to own a piece of that astounding collection.
