Here is an original edition of the 1861 U.S. Army Regulations tactics manual. On the
title page it states that it was printed by the Philadelphia firm of George W. Childs in 1863. This is the classic style of Army regulations that were used throughout the Civil War by union officers. It has 594 pages detailing everything from uniform regulations to instructions for the quartermaster's Department. It has many charts and graphs. The overall size of the book measures 5 1/2 inches by 8 1/2 inches in overall size. It has the original blue cover with the gold gilding on the spine. As you can see the book has some wear and all of the pages appear to be present and accounted for. What makes this one extra special is that inside the cover it reads in ink "Nelson E. Prentice 1st Lieut. Co. M. 1st regt. O.V.H.A. Battery Phil Carney Campbell Co. Ky. Nov 16th 1863" The records show that Nelson
E. Prentice was 32 years old when he enlisted
on September 5th 1863 as a 1st Lieutenant, he was commissioned into "M" Co. of the 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery. He
was Mustered Out on 7/25/1865 at Knoxville, Tennessee. The 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery Regiment was originally organized at Portsmouth, Ohio on 15 September 1862 as the 117th Ohio Infantry.
