This is one of the rarest of all Confederate blockade runner documents. It is an original investment stock certificate from the Blockade Runner Sloop Gov. Brown and Cargo. This is one of the ships that took the opportunity and chance to profit by running goods through the Union naval blockade of the South. This is a printed certificate with the blanks nicely filled in in ink. The paper measures 3-1/2 inches by 8 inches in overall size. It has the printed location of issuance from Savannah, Georgia and is dated from October 1st 1864. It is stock certificate No. 26, with an ink issuance to Mr. Aaron Wilbur, for one $1,000 share in the Sloop Governor Brown and Cargo. The Governor Brown was named after Joseph E. Brown, who served as Governor of Georgia for the entirety of the Civil War and in the US Senate following Reconstruction. There is record of it running the blockade into Savannah in 1863, but we could not determine its fate after that. There are several of other blockade runner stock certificates pictured in the book, The English Connection but this one is scarce enough that it isn't pictured in that book. On the back of the paper, it has the printing where the share could be transferred but it never was. This one is in beautiful condition and is displays superbly in all regards.
