This is an authentic signature of Confederate General William Mahone (1826-1895). Mahone was a V.M.I. graduate that participated in the Capture of the Norfolk Navy Yard by Virginia Volunteers. He commanded a Brigade at the Battle of Seven Pines. He was highly regarded for his bravery and gallantry at the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and the Wilderness Campaign. During the Battle at Petersburg he held off the Federal attack after the explosion of the mine. Mahone was appointed the rank of Major General by Robert E. Lee and would be paroled at Appomattox Courthouse. After the Civil War, Mahone went into the railroad business. This document is a bond certificate for the Norfolk & Petersburg Railroad Company. Mahone was the president of the railroad and it is printed dated on January 1st 1867. The paper measures approximately 11 inches by 7 inches in overall size.
