Here's a sword that has a cool look and an even cooler retailer marking. During the 1800s these militia style officer swords were a desirable weapon. The purchaser could go in and they were basically like a car. You could buy the base model and depending on how much you wanted to spend you could add on anything that you wanted. What makes this one extra special is the retailer marking on the base of the blade. It has the etched marking of "R. & A. / CAMPBELL / BALTIMORE." Robert & Andrew Campbell were in business in Baltimore from 1835 until 1854. On the backside of the blade which measures 30-3/4th inches it has the Union eagle with the "E PLURIBUS UNUM" motto. Below that, it has the American Indian design. The cross guard of the sword has the large star in the center. The original handle is intact on the sword and has a pleasing look to the bone material. At the top of the sword it has the Knight's head pommel Design. The crossguard has the original chain going up to the pommel cap. The sword is accompanied by an original militia style scabbard. The scabbard has the dual rings intact and they are the "fixed" style with the ornate design. The scabbard has the front side that is beautifully engraved with floral and geometric designs. Below the lower mount, it has the gorgeous engraved Union eagle with the shield. This is the EXACT sword that is featured on pg. 365 in "American Silver-Hilted, Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords Volume I". This is a wonderful sword with a clear Baltimore retailer marking!
