Beautiful Autograph of Confederate General Joe Wheeler on a 1905 Letter

Here is a wonderful original autograph of Confederate General Joseph Wheeler autograph. Joseph "Fighting Joe" Wheeler (September 10, 1836 - January 25, 1906). He was born in Augusta, Georgia on September 10th 1836. He spent most of his youth with relatives in Connecticut. He entered West Point Military Academy in July 1854 representing his home state of Georgia. He graduated on July 1, 1859, placing 19th out of 22 cadets. At the outbreak of war he resigned from the Union Army and commanded the 19th Alabama Infantry. He was promoted to the rank of brigadier general on October 30th 1862. He served fiercely commanding cavalry in the Army of Tennessee and was promoted to major general on January 20th 1863. During his career in the Confederate States Army, Wheeler was wounded three times and is considered my many to have been one of the finest cavalrymen of the Confederacy. After the Civil War he lived in Alabama and served int he United States Congress. In 1898, Wheeler, now aged 61, volunteered for the Spanish American War, receiving an appointment to major general of volunteers from President William McKinley. He served during that was and the Philippine Insurrection. He died in New York City on January 25th 1906. This autograph is on a letter dated February 19th 1906 written from the Hotel Sheldon in El Paso, Texas. He is writing home to his children and tells them that he has just rode a train for 1,224 miles across Mexico. The signature is vividly clear and in beautiful shape and he signs it "With All my love / Your devoted Father / Joseph Wheeler." The 2- sheet letter paper measures 9-1/2 inches wide by 6 inches tall. The document is accompanied by a modern copy of General Wheeler in Uniform and a printed biography of Wheeler's service. This will make a superb set when it is framed on your wall.
