VIRGINIA ARTILLERY! Indian War Era Eagle Hat Insignia for a Shako or Pith Helmet
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a great displaying piece! This is the large eagle insignia that would have adorned the front of a shako or pith style helmet from the late Indian war time frame until the Spanish American war. Behind the shield it has the crossed cannon design which lets us know it was worn by a member of the artillery branch of service. It is large in size measuring 4-1/2 inches by 4 inches in overall size. It is made of gold gilded stamped brass. It still has all three of the original attachment loops intact on the reverse. The Union eagle has the shield on her chest with the arrows of war in one talon and the branch of peace in the other. Applied to the shield, it has the applied individual silvered letters "VA". This stands for Virginia or Virginia Artillery. This is a great piece from Virginia!
