Rare U.S. Navy Marked Hotchkiss Patent Leather Cartridge Box
Click on an image to enlarge
This is one of the oddest and toughest to find of the Indian War era cartridge boxes. After the Civil War there were many attempts to design the perfect cartridge box. This is one the attempts that didn't make it. This is the one that received their patent on October of 1879 and it is so marked on the back of the box along with the maker's mark of Joseph Walton of New York. The box is designed so that the top section, held in place by a finial and closure tab on the side, should pivot and turn around so that it cups the bottom of the cartridge box body. This one still pivots and the leather is complete as you can see but is heavily worn. The top portion has the traces of the "USN" marking that lets us know it was designed for the United States Navy. The inner compartment is open as you can see so it could hold any type of cartridge desired. The wooden block is present. On the reverse of the box it has both of the original belt loops intact and in nice condition. You seldom see these offered for sale these days.
