This is a very nice looking original Civil War soldier's percussion capbox. These were used by the soldiers to carry the percussion caps for the rifles, carbines and pistols. This is a nice one with both of the original belt loops on the back. It has the brass finial intact as well as the closure tab that holds the outer flap in place. The inner flap has the H.W. Oliver maker's mark from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania still present. Henry Oliver made many quality leather goods during the Civil War such as this one. This is a nice maker mark to have on a percussion cap box because they only had contracts with the Government in 1863 and 1864 so you know this one is a true Civil War percussion capbox. On the innermost compartment it still has the original vent pick for cleaning out the musket nipple. It also has traces of the original lamb's wool intact. This wool was added to keep the caps from falling out. This is a very attractive original Civil War soldier's percussion cap box.
