Original Example of the Civil War Model 1860 Cavalry Saber with Partial Date
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an original example of the Civil War model 1860 cavalry saber. This is the classic style of saber you think about when you think of the Civil War. It has a full-length blade. At the base of the blade you can see the "US' marking as well as traces of the production date "186?" with the last digit not being visible. The base of the blade has the "C.E.W." inspector initials. This is where the sword was approved for military service by the Government inspector, Charles E. Wilson. His initials usually mean that the sword was an Ames made sword but we can no longer see the maker's marking. The original wooden core of the handle is intact with the leather lost to the ages. It still has the double strand twisted brass wire remaining. The brass of the hand guard and pommel cap have a nice looking untouched tone. This is a nice original sword that won't break your wallet.
