Excellent Autograph of Confederate General M.C. Butler of South Carolina
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an authentic signature of Confederate General Matthew Calbraith Butler (1827-1909). It is a nice clear signature on a clipped piece of paper. It is very clear and even has the "S.C." lettering for South Carolina. Butler was a South Carolina lawyer and served as the Colonel of the 2nd South Carolina Cavalry. During the fierce battle at Brandy Station, Virginia Butler lost his foot from wounds. After the Civil War he was elected a U.S. Senator in 1876. The paper measures approximately 4-1/8th inches by 1-1/2 inches in overall size. It is a fine original signature that will make a solid addition to any Confederate Civil War collection. A Xerox copy of an original photograph of the general will accompany the autograph for display purposes.
