Georgia 1853 Slave Bill of Sale for "...a Negro Girl Harriett about Fourteen Years"
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an original and scarce slave bill of sale from the State of Georgia from 1853. This one is dated in brown ink from Macon County in the State of Georgia. For the amount of $800. Nathaniel Poindexter was selling a slave to Thomas Dixon. He is selling "...a Negro Girl Harriett about Fourteen years of age." There is also a notation that he warrants the "sound in body, mind and also warrant a good title to the said Negro...". According to the history, Thomas Dixon was born in North Carolina, and relocated to Macon County, Georgia, in 1827, perhaps taking advantage of land made available by the forcible removal of the Cherokee Indians. Georgia newspapers from the 1840s and 1850s indicate that Dixon became involved in local government, assuming the roles of constable, deputy sheriff, and sheriff for Macon County. The 1850 U.S. Federal Census Slave Schedule indicates that Dixon enslaved one woman, age 27, yet by 1860 the U.S. Census indicates that he enslaved 18 men, women, and children. Often when you see the estate totals the slaves were by far the greatest valued item in the listings. The paper measures approximately 7-7/8ths inches by 4-7/8ths inches in overall size, which is just the right size for framing. This is a fine piece of Civil War history from antebellum Georgia!
