This is a great looking piece of history from the Grand Army of the Republic. The Grand Army of the Republic or G.A.R. was the organization made up of Union Survivors of the Civil War. They held reunion and erected monuments to the men that fought for the north during the Civil War. This medal was to commemorate the 1892 reunion of the G.A.R. that was held in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The top bar has the "ANN ARBOR". The medallion has the markings on the back the designation that lets us know it would have proudly been worn by a soldier from the Department of Michigan in the G.A.R. The front of the medal has Norval E. Welch (c. 1835 – September 30, 1864) who was an American colonel who commanded the 16th Michigan Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War before being killed at the Battle of Peebles's Farm. The original pin is on the reverse of the top bar. The ribbon displays well with some light wear. This is an excellent medal for any collection.
