Vicksburg Mississippi Excavated Virginia State Seal Coat Button VA7
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an excavated Civil War uniform button for the state of Virginia with a tougher to find backmark. This is the classic Civil War style that has the state seal on the face of the button with "VIRGINIA SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS" around the rim. The Virginia motto of Sic Semper Tyrannis is Latin and translates into "Thus Unto Tyrants". The face of the button has a good look but the detail is light and it has a small push. The original back is present on the back and it has the correct Civil War era Scovill Manufacturing Company maker's mark from slightly before the Civil War. The button has the original shank intact on the reverse. This is the style listed as figure VA7A in Albert's button book and VA215a4 in Tice's button book. The verbal history that accompanies this button is that it was found in Vicksburg, Mississippi. If this history is correct, there was only one Virginia Artillery unit present at Vicksburg, the Botetourt Artillery. This is great looking button for any collection with a nice history.
