This is a nice authentic Civil War Enfield pattern rifle that has the straight out of the attic look. This is the tougher to find 2-band style short rifle that was carried by soldiers throughout the Civil War. This one was made by the firm of Potts & Hunt and is so marked on the lockplate of the musket. It also has the "LONDON" production location. Potts & Hunt is one of the firms that are known to have produced weapons that were imported to the Confederacy. The action catches on the full cock position but slips off of the first position. The barrel is full-length at 33 inches and no longer has any of the rifling remaining. It has the vividly clear correct London inspector proof marks at the breech. It has the original front sight intact but the rear sight has been gone for eons. The stock has a nice medium color tone all over with a nice used but not abused look. Behind the triggerguard, it has the Crown and "H" stamping still visible. The gun still has one of the two sling swivels on the underside of the gun. The ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel is a correct original. If you notice this gun is entirely iron mounted compared to most Enfields that have the brass buttplate, triggerguard and nose cap. One thing that is special about this gun is that it is the style that has the saber bayonet lug that is integrally made into the front barrel band. This is referred to by collectors as the "Bar on Band" style Enfield saber bayonet because it clipped right onto the barrel and instead of a lug on the side of the barrel. This is a nice looking, tough to find version of the Enfield pattern rifle with the desirable Potts & Hunt maker mark that you can tell saw extensive service.
