This sword has a fantastic ancient look! This is a great looking original Civil War dated cavalry saber. It has the look all over like it spent 100 years in a cabin or barn. This is the classic model 1860 that was carried by the Union cavalryman during the Civil War and is the style most people associate with the war between the states. The sword has a full-length blade with a light gray tone all over with a few service nips along the edge. It has the desirable production date of 1863 stamped at the base. You can also see the "US" mark marking and the inspector initials of "D.R.". These are the initials of the man who inspected swords for the U.S. Government, Daniel Reynolds. The back of the blade has the straight line style maker's mark of the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. Ames was the foremost maker of Civil War swords and sabers for the Union government. The guard and pommel cap have a great golden color and look to the brass. The leather and double twist brass wire are both original on the handle and display well as you can see from the pictures. The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard. The scabbard is complete with both mounts and rings as well as the throat and drag being present. The scabbard has a thick dark patina with some dents from service. It has the matching "D.R." inspector initials on the side of the scabbard drag. This is a nice looking authentic 1863 dated Ames cavalry saber from the Ames Company.
