Authentic Civil War Artillery Shells & Cannonballs
Artillery
Excavated Confederate 3 Inch Mullane Shell With 2 Studs Remaining
Click on an image to enlarge

This is an original Civil War Confederate artillery shell with excellent iron. This is the style that is known to collectors as the Confederate "Mullane" pattern shell. The body of the shell looks very similar to the Confederate Read shells but the base is completely different. The base had the copper sabot intact with the distinctive rifling from the Confederate cannon. The sabot of these Mullane shells are held on by an iron bolt and three studs. This one still is missing the bolt but it still has two of the original three studs intact. As you can imagine with this design the sabot and bolt almost always flew off in flight but this one is nicely intact. At the top of the shell it has the fuse hole that would have used a wooden fuse holder that was lost to the ages. The iron of the shell is in beautiful shape and has been nicely cleaned and coated for display and preservation. This is a good looking Confederate cannon shell of the Mullane pattern.
