Here is a very interesting Civil War socket bayonet. Upon 1st glance, it looks like one of the socket bayonet made for use with the early production muskets forced into service during the Civil War. But this bayonet fits perfectly on a .58 caliber Springfield rifle. It fits the model 1855,1861 and 1863 Springfield rifles. The have the model 1855 pattern blade with the "US" on the base. The socket is very similar to the 1816 that doesn't use a lock ring. It has a long different style cut out for the musket lug. On the top of the socket, it has the letter and digits that would have hand fitted it to the musket or rifle. This one appears to be "U 15". The bayonet is in fine condition with honest wear and a pleasing look. the last few images show how it looks on a .58 caliber Springfield. This is the only one of these bayonets that I have encountered. Don't miss this one.
