Here's a great looking gun that you seldom encounter. This gun is an original US model 1814 flintlock rifle. These were only made from 1814 until 1817. The government gave the contract for 2000 of these guns to only two makers, Henry Derringer of Philadelphia and R. Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. This is one of the 2000 that was built by Henry Derringer, who is best known for the small size pistols that bear his name. The barrel of the gun is 33 inches in length and still has crisp rifling inside the barrel. These barrel are crafted using a part octagonal and part round barrel. Along the top of the barrel, you can still read most of the "DERINGER / PHILADA" maker marking. At the base of the barrel it still retains the proof marks that included "US" and "P" and "F". On the lock plate of the gun it has the vividly clear Henry Derringer Mark as well as the Philadelphia production location and the "US" stamping in front of the hammer. The action of the lock works well on both positions. When this gun left the factory, it was a flintlock rifle and it was converted later on so it could be used in the "modern" percussion state. The stock of the gun has a very pleasing medium tone all over. On the flat of the stock it has the distinctive oval patch box still intact. On the flat of the stock, opposite of the lockplate, it has the inspector stamping of "V" over "GF". This is the marking by the inspector George Flegel, who approved the gun for military service. It has the slightly raised cheek rest on the back side of the shoulder stock. The gun still retains both of the original to sling swivels intact as well as an original ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel. One extra thing that makes this gun so special is that it has the original leather shoulder sling. It is crafted out of brown leather and has almost petrified in place over the years. This is a fine looking gun of a scarce model 1814 rifle.
