This is a beautiful original 1864 dated Civil War mounted artillery saber. This one has a full-length blade with the maker marks at the base. It has the remnants of the straight line style maker's mark of "AMES MFg. CHICOPEE MASS." on the base of the back of the blade. Ames was the premiere maker of these artillery sabers during the Civil War. The front of the blade has the " US" mark as well as the inspector initials of "M.M.". This is the initials of the man who inspected swords for the U.S. Government, Miles Moulton. You can also clearly see the stamped "1864" Production date. The original guard and pommel cap are present and have a nice color to the brass with a copper tone in places. The edge of the pommel cap has the "JH" inspector initials still visible for the inspector John Hannis. On the handle it has about 60% of the original leather grip remaining. The twisted copper wire that has been patched but still displays well as you can see. The sword is is missing the metal scabbard. This is a fine looking Civil War artillery saber with the Civil War production date.
