Cool Small Single Shot Pistol With Tack Decorations Possible Native American Gun
Click on an image to enlarge
You see guns all the time these days with modern tacks added to the wood. This one looks like the tack have been there for eons. This is important because many of the guns that made it into the hands of Native Americans in the West were decorated by them using tacks. The gun measures 10-1/2 inches in overall size with the barrel making up 5 of those inches. It fires a big bullet of .58 caliber. You can see that this gun was hand made using parts from a larger gun. They hand carved the single piece wood stock. They added a simple triggerguard as well as a hand made grip cap. It has the early pattern unmarked lockplate. The original gun would have been a flintlock and it was converted to percussion using a drum style conversion. The mechanics of the lockplate still catches on both of the positions. On the front side of the stock, they added four round headed tacks. the back side of the gun sports six of the matching round head brass tacks. This gun has tons of character!
