Harvey Maker Marked English Revolutionary War Era 1742 Hanger Sword
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a very cool sword from the time around the Revolutionary War. This is the shorter pattern sword style that is known to collectors as the Pattern 1742 infantry "hanger" pattern sword. It is the 28 inch blade with a wonderful ancient look. Along the top of the blade on each side, it has the single deep fuller groove. On each side of the blade, it has the running fox trademark with the 1745 production date. This is the mark of Samuel Harvey of Birmingham, England. Bezdek's book on English Swords states that he was located at 74 High Street in Birmingham from 1767 until he died in 1778. This marking is very desirable because of the ones used during the American Revolution. The blade has a fine looking mottled gray tone all over with some pitting here and there. The handle is version with thetwisted wire grip wrap ending in the capstan style pommel that is the version referred to by collectors as the "1742" type. The sword is accompanied by the majority of the leather scabbard. It is a fine looking original Revolutionary War era sword by Harvey.
