This is an original Civil War .44 caliber Colt revolver. These guns are better known to collectors as the Civil War "Army" model revolver. They were a weapon of choice for most branches of the service during the War. This one has serial numbers of 137,234 except for the barrel wedge which is a modern made replacement. These serial numbers are what is special about this gun and they let us know who carried it. Thanks to the research, we have a copy of the inventory sheet that lets us know that it was carried by a member the 7th Indiana Cavalry during the Civil War. The 7th has a very colorful Civil War history. The 7th is one of the regiments that would have fought Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest at the battle of Okolona. In January of 1864 the regiment was assigned to the command of General Benjamin Grierson who was famous for his 1863 raid at Newton Station. These let us know that the gun was manufactured in the middle part of 1863. The paper shows that this serial number was issued to Gustavus Jones who served with the 7th Indiana Cavalry. The records show that Jones was from Porter County, Indiana and he enlisted on 8/24/1863 as a Private in the 7th Indiana. He mustered into "A" Co. Indiana 7th Cavalry and served until he was mustered out on 9/19/1865. He rose to the rank of Sergeant during his service. Across the top of the barrel is the Colt maker's mark along with the New York City location. These guns were actually manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut with the sales office being in New York City. The action of the gun works functions on all positions. There is still a small amount of the original cylinder scene visible. The cylinder scene depicts the Texas navy's victory over the Mexican navy. In my opinion, the cylinder has been replaced somewhere along the line. On the side of the frame you can see the "COLTS PATENT" mark. The gun has the old salt and pepper pitting from the years in the veteran's attic. On the handle of the gun the original 1-piece walnut grip is present with a nice well worn look. It has the military sub inspector initials on the other major parts of the gun. This is a nice and honest Civil War .44 caliber Colt Army model revolver with a very pleasing well worn look. It is accompanied by the information of the 7th and Jones' service.
