Here is a cool pair of items associated with the 1st Rhode Island Cavalry. The book is entitled "General Orders affecting the Volunteer force Adjutant General's office 1863". What makes it extra special is that on one of the early pages it proudly states "Respecfully presented to Surgeon W. H. Wilbur 1st Rhode Island Cavalry by John R. Umfreville 1st Lt. and A.A. January 1st 1864/ Camp Russell VA". The book is in good shape with no pages missing, the page with inscription is loose but no tears just usual wear from age. The spine is tight through most of the book. John R. Umfreville was a resident of Warren, RI when he enlisted as a Sgt. On 11/12/6. On that date he mustered into Co. A, 1st Rhode Island Cavalry. Listed as on detached duty 4/15/63 at Dumfries, VA. Taken prisoner on 6/18/63 at Middleburg, VA; released on 7/23/63 at City Point, Promoted to 1st Sgt., date unknown. Re-enlisted on 1/5/64. Promoted to Sergt. Major on 11/1/64 and transferred to Field & Staff, 1st RI Cavalry. Promoted to 18 Lt of Co. H, 1s RI Cav on 12/6/64. 1/1/65 transferred from Co. H to Co. B (consolidation). Mustered out on 8/3/65 at Baltimore, MD. William H. Wilbur was a resident of Westerly, RI when he enlisted as a Surgeon on 11/29/62. On that date he was commissioned into Field 8 Staff, 1st RI Cavalry. Listed on detached duty from 2/15/63 thru 6/15/63; and again from 7/6/63 to 8/15/63. Listed as absent on leave for 10 days starting on 1/26/64; and again on 11/28/64, for 15 days. He mustered out on 8/3/65 at Baltimore. The CDV is a full length view with two soldiers seated in the front, another standing behind. The back of the CDV lists in ink the names of "Rogers Major / Tibbits C[UP). S. Vols. / Umfreville Adi". At the top of the image in ink is written "The Immortal trio present their compliments to Mrs. J.A. Umfreville 3 Johns". What is confusing in the latter is the wording "3 Johns'; we believe Tibbits is Capt William B. Tibbits of the 21st NY Cavalry who were at Camp Russell around the same time as the First Rhode Island Cavalry. As for Rogers, there are too many John Rogers to make a definite ID.
