Superbly Marked New Orleans Cook & Brother Confederate Naval Cutlass
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a great piece of Confederate naval history! This is the cutlass that was carried and used on board ship by sailors in the Confederate navy. What is great about this cutlass is that it is maker marked. The blade is full length at 20 inches and it is 2 inches at the widest point. You can see the spots where the blade was hand forged by Cook. The blade has the dark ancient attic tone with the nicks along the edge so you know that it was used. On the inside of the heavy brass handguard it has the very desirable maker's marking of "COOK & BROTHER". This is the distinctive marking of the firm of Ferdinand W.C. & Francis Cook of New Orleans, Louisiana. They were English Brothers who opened up a gun factory in New Orleans on Canal Street in New Orleans in June of 1861 When New Orleans fell into Union hands, they moved the firm to Athens, Georgia. The hand guard on these cutlasses are very distinctive. The handle of the sword is made of cast brass and has the fish scale style design like that of the union counterparts. The handle and grip has a gorgeous deep uncleaned attic patina all over with a pleasing tone. This is a beautiful 100% original Confederate naval cutlass from the famous firm of Cook & Brother.
