Here is a very cool looking early United States weapon that is 200 years old this year. This is the 69 caliber smoothbore flintlock musket that is officially known as the US model 1808 contract flintlock. In 1808 Congress authorized 19 gunmakers to produce a total of 82,500 muskets. Approximately half of these were eventually produced and delivered. This one is one of the ones that were made for a state contract. In front of the hammer it has the "S. CT" which stands for the state of Connecticut. In Flayderman's guide he states that these were made by the firm of Pomeroy in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. They made these for Connecticut as well as New York and Massachusetts. This gun was originally a flintlock when it left the factory. Later on, it was converted to percussion and in modern times, it has been reconverted to a flintlock configuration and the mechanics catch on the two positions. The barrel of the gun is still full-length at 42 inches and you can still see the inspector proof marks at the breech of the gun. It also has the "S.CT." mark for the State of Connecticut. It also has the 1813 production date still visible. The stock is a deep rich dark tone Walnut wood that displays quite well. It still has an original ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel. Both of the sling swivels are present under the gun with one being a replacement. This is a cool looking original early flintlock reconversion with more character than a Mark Twain novel.
