This is an authentic excavated coat size Civil War Cavalry 21mm button. The face of the button has the spread-wing eagle with the "C" shield on its chest. This denotes the Cavalry branch of service. It has the push to the face as you see in the images and it is priced accordingly. The button has a gold and brown patina all over from the gold gilding and the patination from the ground. The original back and shank are intact. It has the correct Civil War era Scovill backmark still very faintly visible. The verbal history that accompanied this button is that it was recovered near the battle of the Wilderness in Virginia. The Battle of the Wilderness was fought on May 5–7, 1864, during the American Civil War. It was the first battle of Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 Virginia Overland Campaign against General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. The fighting occurred in a wooded area near Locust Grove, Virginia, about 20 miles west of Fredericksburg. Both armies suffered heavy casualties, nearly 29,000 in total, a harbinger of a war of attrition by Grant against Lee's army and, eventually, against the Confederate capital, Richmond, Virginia. This is an original dug coat size Civil War cavalry officer's button.
