Scarce Confederate Read-Parrott "Sideloader" Cannon Shell with Sabot
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a cool excavated Confederate artillery shell. This is the pattern that is known to collectors as the Read pattern shell. It looks very similar to the Union Parrott shell. This one would has the complete iron sabot present on the base of the shell and you can see the rifling markings in the iron from the cannon blast. You can still see the force from being shot out of the cannon barrel chipped the base iron as well. You can just imagine what kind of force that would have taken to accomplish. The body of the shell has been expertly cleaned and coated and is solid. At the top of the shell it has the Confederate copper time fuse holder. The one that is in there unscrews and enhances the display greatly. One neat thing about this shell is that on the side of the body it has the lead "sideloader" plug intact. This is the hole the Confederate had in the side of the shell so they could load the case shot balls and matrix. This is a real rarity in the Confederate artillery collecting arena. You can see that the plug stands out from the white patina of the lead. This is a very nice original Confederate artillery shell with the rare "Sideloader" variation.
