When
President Lincoln called for 150,000 volunteers and soon raised the number to
300,000 many counties throughout the Union established bounties to be pois
volunteers. Most counties did not have the cash to fund the bounties and had to
borrow the funds from citizens. This note was issued to repay $100 as a part of such a loan as a Vol. bounty fund: and states that it is
"Expense of Volunteering" and notes that it was for "Appropriation for said Expenses." The note was issued by the treasurer of
Harrison county and is dated February 15th 1865 at Corydon, Indiana. The preprinted paper has the image of the maiden on the left hand side. The blanks are filled in using fine brown ink. On the back of the paper, it states that they were unable to pay it initially because of "...want of funds...". The front says it was finally redeemed in April of 1866. It coems in an acid free holder for display and preservation.
