Beautiful Percussion Capbox by Metzger of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an attractive displaying Civil War leather box that held the percussion caps for muskets, pistols or carbines. This one is in very nice shape and has a very attractive look. It has both of the belt loops intact on the back of the box. On the outer flap with the closure tab and brass finial intact. On the inner flap you can see the Civil War maker's mark of Metzger of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania still visible. On the lower portion of the closure tab it has the oval inspector stamp from the U.S. Government inspector for the Ordnance Department "H.H. HARTZELL". The maker and inspector stamps are as clear as you will ever see on one of these boxes. The inner flap is nice and has both of the "ears" present on the sides. On the inner pocket it has had the lamb's wool removed. The lamb's wool was added to help keep the caps inside but the soldiers often removed the wool to make the caps easier to get out during battle. The original vent pick for cleaning out the gun's nipple is still inside. This is a nice displaying original classic Civil War percussion cap box from Metzger.
