Militia Style Civil War Cartridge Box with Post War National Guard Alteration
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a great looking cartridge box. It is one of the many Civil War and earlier cartridge boxes that were altered so they could be used after the Civil War. The box itself has the classic styling of a Civil War or earlier rifleman's cartridge box. It has the double shoulder strap loops intact on the reverse as well as slits for putting it on a belt of the box. Also on the bottom of the box it has the brass finial intact along with the closure tab that has detached but is present. All of the leather has been tarred to make it more durable. On the outer flap of the cartridge box it has the fancy script lettering of "MNG". This would be for a state national guard. Most people say it is Massachusetts but it could have been for any of the other "M" states like Maine or Maryland just as easily. When you raise up the outer flap it has had a solid wooden block put into where the original tin that would have held the post Civil War style cartridges in place to keep the shape. This is a nice looking cartridge box that has had a couple of lives over the years.
