Spectacular C.S. Clip Corner Buckle With Spun Style Hooks from the 1st Alabama
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a great looking belt buckle! It is the classic style known to collectors as the Tennessee style round corner buckle. It has the bold "CS" letters on the front of the buckle and they can be seen from across the room. This is the pattern listed as figure #128 of the revised edition of Mullinax' book on Confederate belt buckles. This is a very beautiful version of this buckle. This one still retains a fine amount of the original black enamel paint down in the recesses around the letters. The back of the buckle has all three of the original hooks intact. This is the pattern known as the "Spun Hooks" clip corner by collectors. This is because of the way the hooks were lathed after they were cast left circular patterns at the base of the hooks. The history accompanying the buckle is that it was found in the campsite of the 1st Alabama Cavalry. The letter that accompanies it is that it was recovered by Wayne Read in 1976. The letter is from Larry Hicklen and he states that he dug an almost identical one about 30 yards from this one. This is a wonderful buckle from all angles.
