Artillery
Rarity 10 out of 10! 3 Inch Diameter Britten Shell With Full Sabot
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a gorgeous piece of Civil War artillery. It is a excavated rifled cannon projectile for the rifled 2.9 Inch Blakely cannon. This is the style listed on page #110 of the 1993 edition of the artillery shell book by Dickey & George. This is one of the projectiles which were designed to explode and raining down shrapnel. It would have had a brass Britten pattern percussion fuze at one time (missing). This is a British pattern projectile that was utilized by the Confederacy. Not many of them made it through the blockade's but there have been a few battlefield recoveries but they are rare. In the book they list them as a rarity of 10. This one is in exceptional excavated condition. On the top of the bolt you can see the line indentation from manufacturing. At the base it has the entire lead sabot still present and in beautiful condition and you can clearly see the rifling marks from when it was fired out of the cannon. This one is as nice as you will ever encounter and any collector or museum would appreciate having it.
