Charles City, Virginia Excavated U.S. Cartridge Box Plate
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an excavated Civil War U.S. cartridge box plate. This would have adorned the front of a soldier's cartridge box at one time. The weight of the plate helped to keep the outer flap of the cartridge box closed. It has the "US" on the brass face of the plate. The back of the plate has about half of the lead still remaining with the rest being melted out. You can see the outline of the bases where the original iron attachment loops on the back of the plate were at one time. These iron loops would have held the plate onto the cartridge box at one time. The verbal history that accompanied this piece is that it was found years ago on private property in the Charles City, Virginia area. This is a nice displaying cartridge boxplate from Charles City.
