Here is one of the most beautifully and elaborately designed buttons of the Civil War era. This is the coat size uniform button that was for students at the Collegiate & Commercial Institute, in New Haven, Connecticut. These buttons are designed almost flat, with a two-piece construction. The button face has an open book at the center, surrounded by symbols of industry and art. The Institute was established in 1836, and graduated its last group of students in 1895. All of these buttons were made during the 1850s and 1860s.The device contains an open book at the center, surrounded by symbols of industry and art. The back of the button has the "• SCOVILL MF"G CO, • / WATERBURY." marking. It is listed as SU85 in Albert's button book and as CTS278A2 in Tice's button book. What a cool looking button.
