Nicely Marked "USN" Civil War Navy Percussion Cap Box by Metzger of Philly
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a rare original "USN" marked Civil War navy percussion capbox. This one has the embossed "USN" that is clear as a bell on the outer flap. When you lift the flap you are greeted by one of the clearest maker's marks of "METZGER" of Philadelphia that you can hope for. It also has the US Ordnance Department sub inspector Mark of H.H. Hartzell. He was the man that approved the percussion cap box for military use. The wool and pick are gone as usual but it displays well. Both of the original leather belt loops are intact and solid as a rock on the back of the box. This will be a great looking addition to your capbox collection or for your Civil War navy display.
