This is a tough to find version of an original excavated Civil War company hat letter insignia. This is the letter "A" which would stand for the "A" company designation in the regiment. These are tough to find since the Company "A"s have the shape that breaks apart easily when they were lost. It is made out of stamped brass and it measures 1 inch by 1 inch in overall size. It has a pleasing excavated tone to the brass and even has the remnants of the solder on the reverse. This is where the original attachment loop was at one time but is missing as they so often are. When this one was excavated it was bent with the tip of one of the legs broken and we had it restored for display purposes. The verbal history that accompanied this piece is that it was found in the 1960's in the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia area. Chancellorsville was a battle between the Confederate forces of Robert E. Lee and Union General Joseph Hooker on April 30th until May 6, 1863.This is a fine excavated piece of insignia.
