This is an original gun worm for a 1880's era sporting rifle. This is the style that is illustrated on the top page #27 of the 2nd volume gun tool book by Shaffer & Dorsey. They list this one as a style that was illustrated in an 1880's catalogue by Hartley & Graham that they sold in their sporting catalogue. These were used for the cleaning out of the bore of the gun. They held a wad of tow (the fiber of flax, hemp or jute). This tow has then used for regular maintenance of bore cleaning. They could also be used for the extracting a bullet if there was a problem with firing or any other reason they needed to pull the bullet out. It is 2-1/8thths inches in overall length. This one is in excellent non-excavated condition.
