Autographed Letter of Union General Benjamin "Beast" Butler
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a fine original signature of Civil War Union General Benjamin F. Butler better known in the South as "BEAST BUTLER". He received this nickname because of the brutal treatment he unleashed on the civilians of the City of New Orleans. This autographed typed letter is addressed to Charles P. Thompson, Justice of the Superior Court. It was written from Boston, Massachusetts on October 4th 1888 and is on Butler's office stationery. Butler asks the judge to to appoint "J.P. Silsbee of Boston... a Bail Commissioner," and vouches for his competence. It is clearly signed, "Benj. F. Butler." The original autograph is accompanied by a modern Xerox copy of an image of General Butler in uniform that displays well with it and would even look nice if you had them both framed up on your wall.
