This is a neat early bayonet. This is the unmarked style that was so often used on military muskets in the time just after the War of 1812 time period. It is similar to the one used for Figure B54 in the bayonet book by Robert M. Reilly. He states how this is a tyle that was a transition to the Model 1816 socket bayonet. it has traits of some of the bayonet from before the 1816 with the "T" style socket of the model 1816. This one measures 18-1/2 inches in overall length. It has a 15-1/4th inch blade that is wide and was made with the top of the blade that has no fuller. It has remnants of a mark at the base of the blade. The socket is 3 inches with the open design without a bridge. It has a nice dark tone all over and is in nice enough condition to put back on a gun. The front of the socket is 21.6mm and the back side is 22.4mm. It is important to remember that bayonets of this timeframe were hand fitted. Just because it is the model for your gun DOES NOT mean that it was slip right on. Even back then, they had to hand fit them to the gun most of the time. This is a very cool and early socket bayonet.
