Here is your chance to own an authentic signature of the Union Generals, Rutherford B. Hayes. In June 1861, the 39 year old Hayes enlisted in the Union Army shortly after the Civil War broke out. He was quickly promoted to major of the 23rd Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry; the same regiment that also included future president William McKinley. Until he was mustered out of service in 1865, Hayes would rise through the ranks to brevet brigadier general, garnering a reputation for leadership and bravery on the battlefield. He was wounded five separate times in combat. This is an authentic CDV card image of Union General Rutherford B. Hayes. It is a nice clear from-life image of the general in his uniform. What makes this image so special, is that the front of the card has the clear ink signature of General Hayes of "RD Hayes" and he adds his rank of "Bvt. Maj. Genl. Vols". When you turn the card over, you see Cumberland, Maryland photographer's marking of Ewing & Company. The hand stamp and cancelled George Washington revenue stamp on verso with the date of December 31st 1865. The card stock itself measures 2-1/2 inches wide and is 4 inches tall. The applied image measures 2-1/4ths inches wide and is 3-3/4ths inches tall.
