This is a scarce gun! It is an original .69 caliber model 1816 military musket made by the firm of R. & J.D. Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. It has their maker's mark on the lockplate as well as the Union eagle and the production location. Behind the hammer it has the "1830" production date. According to Flayderman's guide there were only 600 of the guns made by Johnson. This one has a great look. The metal parts have a salt and pepper tone which makes the deep rich dark tone of the stock stand out even more. The stock is made of dark walnut wood. On the flat of the stock opposite of the lockplate as well as in front of the buttplate it has the cartouche stampings. These cartouches are where the gun was approved for military use by the Government inspectors. The .69 caliber barrel is full-length and it has the matching "1830" production stamped at the breech along with the correct Johnson and government proof marks. The action of the lockplate catches crisply on both positions. It has both of the original sling swivels intact. The front nose cap is missing in action and you can tell by the patina that it has been missing from eons. It has a replacement incorrect style ramrod in the channel under the barrel. This is a very nice looking gun that is quite scarce since they only made 600 of them.
