Scarce Volunteer Maine Militia Small Size "VMM" Belt Buckle

Here is one that you don't often see offered for sale. It is the original Civil War small size belt buckle. What is special about this plate is the lettering on the front. It has the bold letters "VMM" that stand out from across the room. This stands for the "Volunteer Militia of Maine". This is the pattern that is illustrated as figure #556 on page 342 of the O'Donnell buckle book. This is the small size that was designed after the U.S. model 1839 belt buckle. The book states that they were made from 1855 until 1861. As you can see this one still displays quite well. On the back of the plate it has both of the two original belt books intact. The lead is very thin on the back of the buckle as you can see. This is the way that these Maine plates were produced which is another reason that they have such a small survival rate. It is scarce to see one of these small size Maine buckles and this one is a pretty one. Item #: C3286 Shipping Weight:
