Excavated U.S. Cartridge Box Plate From The Corinth, Mississippi Area
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an excavated Civil War U.S. cartridge box plate. This would have adorned the front of a soldier's cartridge box at one time. The weight of the plate helped to keep the outer flap of the cartridge box closed. It has the "US" on the brass face of the plate. The plate has the slight bend as you can see. The back of the plate has the majority of the lead still remaining. You can see the outline of the bases where the original iron attachment loops on the back of the plate were at one time. These iron loops would have held the plate onto the cartridge box at one time. The verbal history that accompanied this piece is that it was found years ago on private property in the Corinth, Mississippi area. Corinth was the staging area for the Confederate army before the battle of Shiloh and was also the location of a fierce battle in October of 1862. This is a nice displaying cartridge boxplate from Corinth.
