Here is a rare early American socket bayonet. This is the style socket bayonet that is described on page 26 of the American Socket Bayonets and Scabbards book by Robert Reilly. It is like the ones illustrated in figure B44A & B44B. He states that these bayonets were manufactured between 1808 or the later model 1812 muskets. He mentions that the majority of them are unmarked but some have the "US" stamped into the metal. On the top of the blade base, this one has such as stamp. On the right hand side of the socket it has the letter "K" stamped into the metal. The bayonet itself measures 17-1/2 inches in overall length. The socket of the bayonet makes up 2-3/4ths of those inches. The opening in the socket is located on the bottom of the bayonet socket instead of the top like the earlier bayonets. The bayonet is in good condition with pretty untouched attic tone from all of the years. It is important to remember that these bayonets are hand fitted to the guns so the odds are that it will not just drop onto your gun. A scarce early socket bayonet from colonial America.
