Nicely Priced Civil War Carbine Cartridge Box by Cummings
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an original Civil War cartridge box for the cavalry carbine. The leather is still nice and pliable. The outer flap still has the original closure tab present and is in well worn shape. When you raise the outer flap, you are greeted by the maker's mark of the Josiah Cummings Company of Springfield, Massachusetts. According to the maker's book by Bazelon & McGuinn, Cummings had contracts for Civil War cavalry cartridge boxes for a total of 5,000 boxes from November 1864 until March of 1865. The implement pouch is still present as well on the inside. On the innermost compartment, it had the block removed eons ago. It has had both of the roller buckles removed off the bottom of the box. It has both of the original belt loops on the back of the box. This is a good looking well worn Civil War cavalry carbine cartridge box.
