Scarce Type I James Solid Cannon Shell "Bolt" In Beautiful Condition
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a fantastic piece! It is an original Civil War James pattern artillery projectile. This is the Type I bolt like that pictured on page #187 of the 1993 edition of the Dickey & George artillery book. He lists it as being a rarity of 7 out of a possible 10 which is a tougher one to find. This is the solid body version that was designed to be fired against fortifications and gun emplacements. The iron on this piece has an attractive look after the years it spent in the ground. When it was fired out of the cannon it threw the lead sabot completely off of around the ribs at the base. The base of these James shells have the ribbed design that collectors refer to as the "bird cage". This one has been cleaned and coated for display and preservation purposes. This is style of projectile that is a must have for any artillery collector.
