SOUTHERN! 6# Solid Shot Cannonball With Partial Sabot Remaining
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a nice Civil War artillery piece! It is an excavated 6# solid shot cannonball. These went in the smooth bore Civil War cannon with a bore diameter of 3.67 inches. This one is in nice shape as you can see. The equator of the ball has the mold seam from the casting process. This is interesting because they are definitely Confederate and the Confederates needed them in the field desperately. You can see where the tin sabot straps were at one time. It has the remnants of the wooden sabot at the base. The sabot has shrunken as you see in the images but it is amazing that it has survived. These 6# cannon were a mainstay for the Confederate artillery here at Shiloh. Since the area was heavily wooded these smoothbore cannon were a very effective weapon for the close combat of the battle here. It will make a nice addition to your artillery collection.
