Civil War Cavalry Burnside or Maynard Carbine Cartridge Box by Davy & Co.
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a very nice looking leather cartridge box for a Civil War cavalry carbine. This is the classic design that was to be carried by one of the mounted troopers that were lucky enough to have one of the state of the art carbines instead of a rifle or musket. All of the outer leather has flaked the finish and now has a pretty brown tone all over. The outer flap on this one has the remnants of the maker's mark of the firm of J. Davey who was located in Newark, New Jersey. The maker book states that Davey had 4 contracts to make a total of 60,000 sets of cavalry accoutrements for the US Governments on September 11th & 12th of 1863. It still has the closure tab present as well as the brass finial on the bottom of the box. The bottom of the box also has had both of the original iron roller buckles still present. When you lift the outer flap it reveals the inner flap as well as the implement pouch on the innermost body. It still has the original wooden block that was designed to hold the cartridges in place. It is the size that fits a Maynard or Burnside carbine cartridges or the post Civil War Spencer cartridges. On the back of the box it has had both of the original leather belt loops present. The last images show how it looks with the cartridges inside but they are not included in the price. This is a fine displaying Civil War cavalry carbine cartridge box.
